Digital marketing is any marketing that happens online. Search engines, social media, ads, email, content and your website all count.
That definition is simple. The hard part is knowing which pieces you need.
The main types
SEO gets you free traffic from Google over time. Google Ads puts you at the top today, for a price. Social media builds familiarity. Meta Ads put your offer in front of people who weren't looking for it. Content answers questions and builds trust. Email follows up with people who already know you.
How it differs from traditional marketing
A newspaper ad reaches everyone and you can't easily tell who responded. With digital marketing you can usually see what each lead cost. That's the real advantage. Not trendiness. Measurement.
Where should a small business start?
I'd usually start with three things: a decent website, a complete Google Business Profile and a small Google Ads test. Those reach people who are already looking for what you sell.
Social media can come after that. Plenty of owners start with Instagram because it feels free, then wonder why nothing's happening six months later.
What I'd ignore
Follower counts, impressions and anything else that doesn't connect to enquiries. Track leads, what they cost and how many become customers.
